Crocheting Hats

Crocheted hats are a wonderful way to keep warm in the winter. They are a useful gift item, and hats are popular items for crafters to make as last minute items, because they are quick to create and one size fits many.

Crochet hats are made in many different styles. Beanie type crochet hats are quite common, with many variations. Crocheted beanies usually begin with a few stitches worked in a circle at what will become the crown of the hat. The beanie is worked in rows around the crown, changing the stitch pattern slightly to create a curved cap-like shape. Any kind of stitch patterns can be used to create lovely designs, such as popcorn stitches, other texture stitches, or colors may be changed to make stripes or other designs. A crocheted beanie hat is usually ended with a last row of special stitches to tie it all together. Some crocheted beanies might be finished with a pom-pom at the crown. Some might have ear flaps crocheted from both sides and crocheted tie cords to keep the hat warmly over the ears. These variations make a simple beanie something special.

A popular and easy kind of crochet hat is an open-crown hat, or a ski-band. This type of hat is worked in a round tube the length needed to cover the ears and forehead, with the crown area of the hat left open. A Ski-band hat is easy to resize to fit any size head circumference because it is stretchy, and it is a good hat to use texture pattern stitches on.
