Crocheting Hats

Crocheting is a fun hobby that allows you to make things for yourself, gifts for friends, items to sell or charity items. Making a hat is one of the most fun things to crochet because there are so many different types to complete.

Your first thing to choose when starting to make hats is the yarn. You can use any weight of yarn, from small baby yarn to a thicker, bulky weight. The heavier the yarn, the warmer the hat. It is a good idea to use acrylic yarn so the hat can be washed many times. Purchase enough yarn so you do not run out. About 125 yards should do it. Then you must choose the hook you will want to use. The wrapper on the yarn will usually tell you what size to purchase.

Once you have your tools, then it is time to start your hat. You will want to make a loop on the hook and a chain of eight stitches. Bring the end of the chain up to the beginning to make a loop. This will be the crown of the hat. Do two single crochet stitches all the way around the loop one time, then single crochet for three stitches and two single crochets in the fourth stitch all the way around. Continue these two rows until you have completed two single crochets in the 13th stitch. Then continue to single crochet around and around until it is the depth you want and turns up like a bowl. Once it is large enough, single crochet in three stitches and skip the fourth. On the next row, single crochet in three stitches and skip two stitches. For the last stitch, make a loop, pull the yarn through and you have a hat.

Follow these tips and you can become a pro. Once you start to crochet hats, you will probably find them addictive. Not to worry; it's a healthy addiction.
