How to Crochet Hats

Hats are easy to make once you know how to crochet. To begin, all you need to do is crochet a circle. Then you will keep going around the circle while increasing the number of stitches in each subsequent row. Whenever the hat is a big enough size to fit the head of the wearer, it is done. Generally, a beginner’s hat will require medium weight yarn, a crochet hook for number 4 yarn, and a yarn needle.

If you see a cool hat that you wish you could have, you can make it with instructions for crocheting a similar one. Pick a color of yarn for your project and get a hook to use with that weight. Work on your initial circle, which makes the top of the hat, until it is as big as you want. Once the circle is done, in order to add length to the hat, you will need to knit around the circle without adding an extra stitch. From this point on, the number of rounds you do will determine the height of your hat.

You must crochet sufficient rounds to reach the ears, then do a test fit before moving on to the brim. You can increase the rounds to give the hat a floppy look. If you want a roll-up floppy brim, increase the rounds for a few rows then stop the increasing for a few rows. You can determine the size of the brim by the total number of rounds you want to do. The size of the hook you use will determine the looseness of the loops. The reverse is also true, so be aware of the warmth factor of your creation.
